If you or your business has recently installed the latest Windows 11 update (KB5063878), you need to be aware of a serious bug that is currently affecting both SSDs and HDDs.
Reports confirm that this update, released on 12th August 2025, is causing drives to freeze, crash, or even disappear completely under heavy workloads—especially when transferring or writing large files. In some cases, data corruption or permanent drive failure has also been reported.

What’s Happening?
The issue is linked to large, continuous file write operations (such as copying, moving, or backing up files larger than 50GB on drives already more than 60% full).
Affected systems may show:
- Freezing during transfers
- Disappearing drives in File Explorer or even the BIOS
- Data corruption or RAW partition errors
- Drives that fail to remount after a reboot
Early testing suggests that some Phison-based SSDs and certain other controllers are more prone to this bug, though other brands have also shown issues. Drives from Samsung and Crucial appear less affected, but no storage manufacturer can be considered entirely safe at this stage.
What You Should Do Right Now
✔️ Back up your data immediately
Use the 3-2-1 rule (3 copies, 2 storage types, 1 off-site/online). Cloud backup or an external hard drive is strongly recommended.
✔️ Avoid large file transfers
Hold off on moving or backing up large files until a fix is released.
✔️ Consider uninstalling KB5063878 if you’re affected
If your PC is showing symptoms, rolling back this update may restore stability. (Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates).
✔️ Stay informed
Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is working with SSD manufacturers to release a fix. We expect further updates soon.
